Why should I care?
VAKHADEMIA or BACCADEMIA or the Academy of Bacchus was created to celebrate the joy that wine can give us, avoiding snobbery and disdain
I have a friend who is a Natha yogi. Once we sat in my kitchen drinking white wine, swirling our glasses and digging out new aromas. At the end we came to completely mind-boggling things and started laughing like crazy. "You're a yogi and still you drink wine". "True, and we've just had a perfect yoga practice".
"Wine Yoga" is a set of practical trainings aimed at purification and mind expansion in olfactic and communicational outline. Ha-ha.
The main thing that differs VAKHADEMIA from classical wine schools is that systematic practice here dominates systematic knowledge, not vice versa. When you enter the right training mode, the sum of patterns of conscious and unconscious switches into action. We call it taste, aromatic and communicational charisma. Besides feeling more and better, you learn to speak about what it is you feel.
A person with this charisma (or Bacchus) switched on is much better at absorbing the knowledge relevant to grape varieties, wine regions, climate and soil characteristics, viticulture and winemaking. Moreover, this knowledge does not lie on the shelf collecting dust. It comes alive in pragmatic social interactions. However, for us it is only a side effect. The main goal of Bacchus switching on is obtaining augmented cognition in the sphere of sensory experience.

How to get pleasure without going bankrupt
The Côte-d'Or has become gold in the truest sense of the word. It's time for millionaires to pawn their palaces and yachts to try Leroy and Rousseau. Selling a kidney will not help a mere mortal to load the liver with Roumier and Leflaive wines.
The stronger is our thirst for cool Burgundy wines at an affordable price. And they do exist! The new Burgundy is dynamic and emancipated, experimenting and returning to its roots. Climate change and the viticultural revolution are allowing some obscure appellations to shine and some talented winemakers to make a name for themselves.
On the course you will find new and old names, rising stars in godforsaken villages and a few lost gems in the parade of famous labels made by legendary winemakers. The course covers the basics of Burgundy's climate, geology and appellations, algorithms for finding new hot spots, and lists of verified names and labels.
Smart White Burgundy Let's start with simple questions: why have the prices for Burgundy soared and how much is "smart buy" today? Then we'll move on to the myths of White Burgundy, Montrachet, Corton etc. expanding the search to «small villages» and «cooler zones» . The climate change and the viticulture revolution are keynotes.

Smart Red Burgundy Burgundy's terroir. We'll superimpose the geological map onto the map of "famous villages" and will go beyond them. Is Volney so feminine and Gevrey so masculine? What influences the wine style more: the terroir or the grower’s skills or the winemaker's personal taste? «Small wines» of iconic domains. Great masters of the «small AOCs».

Another Burgundy Aligote is the new hope of Burgundy. Chardonnay pushed it to the peripheral terroirs, but they did benefit from climate warming. Old vines, low yields and meticulous viticulture work wonders. Gamay on limestone and clay, as well as passetoutgrain, complete the list of "guilty glou-glou pleasure".

We are going to form reference points of a wine taster and install the drivers of main varieties: Riesling and Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscat and Merlot, Sangiovese and Tempranillo. We will create a matrix of all wine regions to facilitate your further knowledge and experience classification. 64 cherry-picked wine samples are going to help you switch on your taste, aromatic and communication charisma.

wine beginners
If food is not just a fuel for you and wine not merely an stress-reliever or a social trigger. Wine is a complex product not because there are too many grape varieties and winemaking regions in the world (music is far more complex than wine). It is only that we are used to living within a total "olfactic deafness". As soon as we start to regularly "give ear" to it, everything falls into place. Wine begins to "be heard". Sure, you are going to hear noises and cacophony among other sounds, but the music is worth it.
experienced wine lovers
Our training regime is more like a journey. While the amount of requests grows, we are going to work through different winemaking countries and regions. Short cycles and one-day trainings will be dedicated to deeper consideration of "through lines": wine and food pairing, climate, varieties, soil, types of wine aging, biodynamics, naturel and so on. On a certain level you are going to get interested in games as well as retreats (true journeys around wineries).
wine professionals
For you we have two training modes. The first is "blind tasting challenge", an integrated system of practices aimed at strengthening a wine taster's analytical frame. It's not unlike ashtanga vinyasa yoga that requires tenacity. This regime suits those who want to polish their blind tasting skills. Analytical frame strengthening is good for everyone. The second training mode is "contemplation", pre-analytical perception training. An important process attending it is pre-symbol communication. Wine professionals often failure to "feel" wine being overfocused on analytics.

Vakhademia is a perfect name! It even sounds a bit Georgian, with this "kh" sound. The concept of wine trainings is actually very appealing. I personally hope to get a Black Belt.

Blind tastings is a popular game among wine-lovers. Your ability to guess varieties & regions blindfold is a real trump card
"Blind Tasting Challenge" course is a first case of a systematic analytical blind tasting training in Russia. 10 trainings is not enough to acquire a "library" of flavors and tasted, it takes years to accumulate it, but it is quite possible to install the very shelves and create a user-friendly catalogue. We are going to work through certain structural parameters of taste and aroma separately and together, using not only wine, but a wide array of other materials. After we have calibrated the receptors, we are going to tackle the main detective patterns.

Etna wine retreat
One week study of the most exciting wine volcano
7 days
7 wineries
Etna is an active volcano and a booming wine region
In early 2000s there were 10 wine producers bottling their wines here. Now their number amounts to 170. The prices of vineyards have grown five-fold in recent five years. In terms of style Etna wines are often compared to Barolo wines and are sometimes called "Burgundy of the Mediterranean" referring to both wine subtlety and an amazing diversity of terroirs. The difference lies only in the fact that the Burgundy terroir goes back millions of years and the Etna terroir is still forming and reforming with new eruptions. Terraces, a hundred-year-old vines, wine makers and reckless madman who have come from all over the world to make great wine — that is something to be watched right now. The programme includes such acknowledged Etna names as Passopisciaro, Tenuta delle Terre Nere, Benanti, Tenuta di Fessina, Pietradolce, Girolamo Russo, Graci, I Vigneri as well as garage wine makers like Eduardo Torres, Vigneti Vecchio, Vini Scirto and many others.

About me
I love wine. I have studied wines with continuous zeal and pleasure: at first in Enotria Wine School in Moscow (2010), then in a London school Wine & Spirit Education Trust (2016-2017). WSET Diploma Level 4 is really a cool achievement, but it's still far from the limit. There is also a Master of Wine programme. Then they will come up with some new level of a Wine God.
I love telling stories too. In 2010-2018 I used to be one of the leading wine writers in Simple Wine News journal, travelling around winemaking regions, interviewing winemakers and tasting, tasting, and tasting.
